Overview

Connecting the two legendary sites of Petra and Wadi Rum is a week-long trek across one of the longest stretches of wilderness on the Jordan Trail. Here in the empty, high-elevation desert, stargazing is at its best, and silent contemplation comes naturally. Beginning with deep, rugged wadis and leading into open, sandy plains surrounded by otherworldly sandstone buttes, this segment of the trail takes you deep into the places where humans seldom go. While Wadi Rum may offer visitors a taste of desert silence, the trek into it is the real thing.

Day 1: Petra to Gaa' Mriebed (22.1 KM, 6-8 HR)

Heading down the Siq to reach the famous Petra Treasury appearing through the narrow slot canyon. Following the winding steps all the way up to the ridge where the High Place of Sacrifice is. Taking a breathtaking path passing the Lion Fountain and Garden Tomb to see the huge view of the wadi’s drop near the waterfall. Reaching the campsite in the area called Gaa’ Mriebed, near scattered Bedouin camps and areas growing crops nearby.

Day 2: Gaa' Mriebed to Wadi Al-Saif (14.3 KM, 4-5 HR)

From Gaa’ Mriebed, entering Wadi Abu O’rouq continuing in the wadi, through beautiful colorful sandstone, walking along the rocky wadi bed and through oleander plants. Winding through a maze of rocky areas and gullies to reach Wadi al-Saif, stay on the same path until you reach the wild campsite spot marking the end of this day.

Day 3: Wadi Al-Saif to Wadi Gseib (12.3 KM, 3-5 HR)

After leaving the camp, the trail rises up to reach the head of Wadi Al-Saif then descending steeply to join Wadi Mshazza. Once again in the midst of wild mountains, leaving that to cross another pass to reach the head of Wadi Gseib. This descends generally South to the next camp.

Day 4: Wadi Gseib to Wadi Aheimer (15.6 KM, 5-6 HR)

The route makes its way back into the mountains heading South East through a beautiful colored sandstone Wadi, It then rises over and crosses an expanse of dunes, descending into Wadi Aheimir. Nice camping area with sand dunes.

Day 5: Wadi Aheimer to Humeima (26.3 KM, 7-9 HR)

From the Wadi Aheimar campsite, staying in the same wadi all the way up to the plateau. The wadi deepens and tightens, turning back and forth more and more, with rocks changing to darker granite. The highlight of the day is when the mountains turn to red and white sandstone and as the stone turns to white chalky sandstone.
